ARUP PLC is a global firm of engineers, with over 30 offices worldwide. ARUP partnered with Telescopic to provide a web application to improve water supply resilience in drought-prone cities worldwide as part of their programme ‘Resilient Water Governance’.
The 'Our Water' web application needed to provide the user with an insight into water supply and governance by surfacing user-sourced data in a way which was visually accessible and could provide both high-level and granular information to a range of different user groups including engineers, academics and policy influencers.
We initiated the project with a discovery phase to analyse need, establish user requirements, objectives and risks. This process included running workshops with potential end users; presenting and facilitating a focus group at the conference ‘Global Knowledge Exchange on urban water resilience’; and running and analysing a number of interactive surveys exploring roles, responsibilities and levels of IT expertise.
Following discovery, we developed a web application based on React.js, with a Django REST API. The application records, analyses and visualises structures and responsibilities within the water sector and highlights governance gaps to improve accountability and planning within the private sector, local and national government.
The application is currently in use in a number of cities worldwide where it is used to inform decision making and manage risk in the water supply chain.
