Vapiano is a German owned restaurant franchise, headquartered in Cologne, with restaurants all over Europe. We were approached by Vapiano Switzerland to build a food delivery app that allows users to order from multiple Vapiano restaurants, as well as other sibling brands, in one place (yes, we know, just like Deliveroo).
Vapiano needed a digital product which would not only win over an audience relatively unfamiliar with online food delivery, but also provide a powerful delivery and account management experience for their staff. The system had to integrate with a number of legacy systems and provide the opportunity to showcase multiple restaurant brands.
Like many of our complex projects, we kicked off with a discovery phase, defining front and backend structures, system logic, user journeys and technical specifications. As the app was to be launched on multiple platforms, development was planned in such a way as to share as much code as possible between Web, iOS and Android app instances. This method not only saves a significant amount of time but also up to 2/3rds of the initial development costs, as the app does not need to be completely rebuilt for each platform.
The app’s backend integrates closely with captain.ai, a delivery management system, for back of house tasks and order tracking, as well as communications with the end user. The app also integrates with Vapiano’s onsite kitchen management and Point of Sale systems, providing a seamless experience for both staff and customers from sign-up through to delivery.
The Android and iOS app versions will be launching soon.
