Ethical tech is good for business. Here’s why

Are legacy systems slowing you down? Are your budgets getting tighter? Perhaps users are complaining about clunky tools or inaccessible websites. Everyone wants you to deliver more, faster (preferably yesterday).

There’s a smart way to approach these problems.

Work with a consultancy that cares about doing the right thing by you, your users, society and the environment.

Not for fuzzy feelings. For practical benefits.

De-risk your digital project

More than two-thirds of digital transformations fail to deliver positive results (Taylor & Francis).

How can working with a values-driven partner help de-risk your project?

They won’t sell you something you don’t need. Because their goal is to get you the right result. That means spending time up front understanding your organisation.

A good values-led partner will likely insist on an assess and plan (i.e. discovery) phase before starting any build or configuration. They spot potential pitfalls early and plan around them. It’s a safety net, reducing the chances of costly surprises halfway through.

What’s more, because values-led teams focus on inclusive design and thorough testing, they catch issues that others might overlook. For example, addressing accessibility or security from day one dramatically cuts the risk of last-minute rework or legal headaches. Fixing a defect in development can cost 100 times less than fixing it after launch (IBM).

Save money in the long run

A partner with strong ethics – like a certified B Corp – can save you money.

You might invest a bit more up front in proper planning or building accessibility features. But those investments pay off. Since they’ve done that careful planning, there’s less scope creep or “oops, we didn’t think of that” moments that blow the budget. If your new system is built right from the ground up, you won’t be shelling out for massive fixes a year down the line when you realise that you didn’t take that new regulation into account. Nor will you need to rebuild the whole thing because it couldn’t scale or wasn’t user-friendly.

In contrast, a purely cost-cutting vendor might deliver something cheap and quick that ends up needing costly do-overs. False economy, anyone?

Think about accessibility as a concrete example of saving money. Making a website or app accessible (usable for people with disabilities) is sometimes seen as “nice to have.” But ignore it at your peril. If your site isn’t accessible, you’re potentially turning away a huge chunk of users. Those people won’t be able to use your services or buy your products, meaning lost revenue or, for charities, fewer donations and engagement.

A values-led partner is also more likely to stick to the agreed budget. Their ethos is about transparency and fairness. If unforeseen issues come up, they’ll work with you to solve the problem, not quietly pile up billable hours.

Provide inclusive, accessible tech

Ever launch a new tool, only to be bombarded with user complaints? (“I can’t log in on my screen reader,” “The text is too small,” “Why doesn’t this work on my phone?”).

When tech doesn’t work for all your users, it’s a moral and practical problem. People get frustrated and stop using what you built.

An inclusive approach means the tech will be designed so everyone can use it – regardless of their protective characteristics. It sends a powerful message: “We care about you all.”

People notice. When a website or app is easy to use and doesn’t exclude people, it builds goodwill. Many users with disabilities become incredibly loyal to organisations that accommodate them – and vocal about it. On the other hand, if someone finds your service inaccessible, they’re likely to tell others. (In one survey, 9 out of 10 blind internet users said they actively warn friends against businesses with inaccessible websites (Nucleus).

By prioritising inclusion, you’re essentially future-proofing your tech against social and regulatory changes too. Despite what the political flavour of the moment might be, accessibility standards and expectations are only rising. Designing for them now means you won’t be scrambling to retrofit or getting caught out by new laws down the line.

Prove your values and boost your credibility

Claiming to care about the environment or social issues isn’t enough, you have to prove it. Working with a values-led digital partner can help you do that. You’re not saying “we prioritise ESG goals,” you’re showing it through the company you keep and the results you deliver.

Take B Corp certification as an example. It’s not easy to become a certified B Corp – a company has to meet strict standards for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

When you collaborate with a partner like that, their credibility rubs off on your project. You can point to the partnership and say, “Look, we chose a supplier who meets high ethical standards. We care about doing this the right way.” It’s a concrete way to back up your brand’s values with action.

Let’s not forget the public. Consumers and service users are increasingly choosy about who they support. Over half of UK shoppers (53%) choose brands that share their values. They give the others a miss. (Accenture).

By choosing a values-led partner, you’re aligning your tech improvements with the kind of ethos your people expect from modern organisations. It’s a strategic choice. You’re ticking ESG boxes that matter for funding and contracts and differentiates you in a crowded field.

Get it built properly

You’ve seen why a values-led partner cuts risk, saves cash and keeps your users on side.

So…who’s going to build it?

We might be a good fit for you.

Telescopic (that’s us) is a certified B Corp digital transformation consultancy. We build and run the things you rely on – sites, apps, CRMs, dashboards – then maintain them. Every decision balances impact and performance and we publish the proof in our annual report.

  • 100% renewable energy powers every site we host
  • Remote-first setup slashes commuting emissions to near zero
  • 9 in 10 devices we buy are refurbished or recycled
  • We do carbon footprint reporting by default for each project
  • ISO 27001 security cuts breach risk (and your compliance costs)
  • Inclusive design – recognised by BIMA – opens your service to more people

Nice stats, but the point is simple. We build tech that works hard for you and does good.

If that sounds like the partner you need, let’s talk.
